[Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
If you were asked to describe God in just one word, what word would you use? The word would need to be big enough to capture God’s greatness, goodness, kindness, and power. The word that many people would choose is this word: LOVE. What does LOVE mean? Is it a feeling? An action? Maybe the best way to describe love is to look at what love is and is not.
Love is NOT: envious, boastful, proud, rude, self-seeking, easily angered, rejoicing in evil.
Love IS: patient, kind, forgets wrongs, rejoices in truth, protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres.
Paul wanted to use the word love to describe God in a letter to the Corinthians, so he used all these words to describe love—to make sure that the Corinthians really understood all the things that God is—and is not.
Jesus’ friend John also used the word love to describe God. He wrote, “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” (1 John 4: 9) Then John said, “God is love.” (1 John 4: 16) But John didn’t stop there; he said that we respond to God’s love with……love. How?
“Let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3: 18) God is love. He loves us. We can pass his love to others. Try it today!
