- Throughout the gospels in the New Testament, we read stories about Jesus having power over nature. Can you think of other miracles where Jesus changed how nature works?
- Some of Jesus’ disciples were experienced fishermen. Still, the wind and waves of this terrible storm frightened them so much that they woke Jesus to save them. As you listen to the story, think about how Jesus did more to save them than they ever expected!

Reflect
The disciples were afraid. That storm must have been very severe for skilled sailors like them to fear for their lives. But after the sudden storm, the even more sudden stillness commanded by Jesus must have shocked them! In Mark 4:41, the disciples responded: “They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’” In Mark's early chapters, the disciples saw Jesus’ power to heal the sick and cast out supernatural demons. Now, they see his power over all of God’s creation. They were fearfully in awe of the man controlling the wind and the waves.
Jesus scolded his disciples, asking them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The lesson is that Jesus was onboard so the boat wouldn’t sink. Today, we must remember that Jesus is with us when we are scared. Do you feel safe in his presence?

What kinds of things make you feel afraid? Have you taken those fears to Jesus in prayer? Remember that Jesus has promised to be with us when we’re afraid. Also talk to a parent, your friends and other adults and ask them to pray about your fears too.
