A: Peter cut off the ear.
Think about the different ways that Jesus suffered.
The religious leaders of the Jewish people wanted very badly to have Jesus dead, but they didn’t have the authority to kill Jesus; the Romans had to do the killing. They took him to Pilate, who was the Roman governor. Pilate asked Jesus some questions. Pilate told the Jewish leaders that he didn’t see any reason why Jesus should be put to death. But they wouldn’t listen to him
By this time, a whole crowd of people had gathered in the courtyard outside of Pilate’s palace. Then the religious leaders began to shout: Crucify him! Crucify him! This crowd began to join them in demanding that Jesus should die. Finally, Pilate gave in and granted permission for the Jewish leaders to kill Jesus.
Before the soldiers led Jesus out to be crucified, they took off his clothes. They put an old robe on him. They put a crown of thorns on his head, and they blindfolded him. Then they spat in his face and laughed at him. They hit him and asked him to tell who had hit him.
Prayer: O Heavenly Father, how hard it must have been to watch your son be treated so cruelly. People screamed for his death. Soldiers hit him, whipped him, and mocked him. I pray for those people around the world who are hit, whipped, and mocked. People hurt other people. Help me bring mercy and love to others who are in need. For Jesus’ sake, Amen.
