Take a few minutes to read the Bible verses listed and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in how this verse applies to you this week.
1 These are the sayings that King Lemuel of Massa was taught by his mother. 2 My son Lemuel, you were born in answer to my prayers, so listen carefully. 3 Don't waste your life chasing after women! This has ruined many kings. 4 Kings and leaders should not get drunk or even want to drink. 5 Drinking makes you forget your responsibilities, and you mistreat the poor. 6 Beer and wine are only for the dying or for those who have lost all hope. 7 Let them drink and forget how poor and miserable they feel. 8 But you must defend those who are helpless and have no hope. 9 Be fair and give justice to the poor and homeless.
Proverbs 31:1-9
Exodus 20:12
12 Respect your father and your mother, and you will live a long time in the land I am giving you.
In 2020, the Coronavirus came and forced us to spend a lot of time with our families. It was hard. For a while, we could not see friends, classmates, or anyone else. Some of us who hated attending school began missing it because our mothers became our teachers. That meant she gave instructions on household chores, good behavior, and schoolwork. It felt like her voice even followed us into our dreams—same words, same instructions, all the time.
Proverbs 31 introduces a mother who also taught her son, King Lemuel, many lessons. No doubt she had to repeat them several times. He used her lessons throughout his reign as king. We can learn from Lemuel’s example. Isaiah 58:1-11, Ephesians 5:18, and many more scripture verses, repeat the lessons taught in Lemuel’s life and what we hear from our own moms.
What if we gave our mothers the gift of listening to and following scriptural advice for Mother’s Day? It could be one of the best gifts ever. Great for Mom. Great for us. How? Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you,” teaches an important principle—God honors those who honor their mother. What an amazing blessing.
