Easter: Go and Tell

Easter: Go and Tell

April 19, 2025

Bible Verse

19 Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.  Matthew 28:19-20

What do your kids think of when they know Easter is approaching? They may think of the songs they’ll sing in Sunday school, the fancy outfits they’ll wear to church, or a special dinner with family. Often, we treat Easter as a celebration—and it is! But it’s not just a celebration. After Jesus rose from the grave, he commanded his disciples to respond to the resurrection by telling others. Easter is more than a celebration; it’s a missional calling to go and evangelize in our communities.

Here are some ideas to help you dig into this topic with your families.

Wonder. As a family, read about the disciples’ final days with Jesus on earth, between his resurrection and ascension into heaven. Allow space for questions and reactions, and wonder at the Word together!

  • Read Luke 24:13-35. Jesus appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, but they didn’t recognize him. What was it like when Jesus explained everything written about him in the Scriptures? The disciples only recognized Jesus after they saw him take bread, bless it, and break it. How do you think they felt at that moment? What did they do afterward?

  • Read Matthew 28:16-20. What did Jesus command his disciples to do? What did he promise them? Do you think Jesus is with us when we tell others about him?

  • Read John 21. A few of Jesus’ disciples had gone back to their old jobs, catching fish. They thought their time in ministry was over. But Jesus appeared to them and performed a miracle. What happened? How do you think the breakfast with Jesus tasted? What did Jesus instruct Peter to do after they finished breakfast?

Worship. In Matthew 28:8-10, the women who went to the tomb were running to tell Jesus’ disciples that he was alive when they suddenly saw Jesus. They responded by holding onto him and worshiping him. Take time to worship together in response to the resurrection. It can be as simple as singing along to a worship playlist, coloring a picture, or decorating Easter eggs to tell the story of Jesus! Whatever you do, glorify God with your worship and enjoy it!

Go. If we hear good news, we naturally want to tell everyone we know about it. So, shouldn’t evangelism be natural? After all, we have the best news of all! Encourage your kids to evangelize to their friends in simple ways, and try it in your social circles too. Evangelism can be as simple as inviting a friend to church. Encourage your kids to bring their friends along to events and services. Open up about your faith with others, and respectfully answer their questions. When you have guests over, include them in your dinnertime prayer. Pray for your kids’ friends and ask God to work in their hearts.

This spring, let’s remember to teach our kids this important truth: Jesus’ resurrection and ascension weren’t the end of the story; these events were just the beginning! Jesus used his time on earth to teach his disciples and prepare them to start the early church. The good news was so good that his disciples couldn’t keep it to themselves. And just like his first followers, we can go and tell others about Jesus.
