Memory Verse

Psalm 71:17-18

17 You have taught me since I was a child, and I never stop telling about your marvelous deeds. 18 Don't leave me when I am old and my hair turns gray. Let me tell future generations about your mighty power.

Before Casey and her mom entered her grandma’s hospital room, she already knew that Grandma would ask, “Tell me three good things God blessed you with today.”

When she asked just that, Casey started to cry. “How can you keep asking me that, Grandma? There’s nothing good about you being sick!”

Grandma wiped Casey’s tears and agreed. “But we can still see God’s goodness,” she said. “I have kind nurses taking care of me, people praying for me, and you are here.”

“Grandma, who taught you to see God’s goodness?” Casey asked.

“My Grandpa,” she said. “And you get to be the one who shows others how to see God’s goodness too.”

Maybe you have a special grandparent or grand friend to talk to about your life, your faith, and God. In Psalm 71, we learn that no matter how many candles are on our birthday cake, God is there for us and helps us. The verse says that God helps kids when older people talk about God’s mighty power. And God helps older people when kids like you share what you’re learning about him. Young or old, we need each other and can remind each other that God sees us, loves us, and is always with us.

But what if you don’t have a grandparent who prays for and encourages you? Then, it’s time to ask.

Ask God to show you who that grand friend could be—a teacher, coach, relative, neighbor, or church friend.

Ask questions.

  • Ask your parents about the family members and friends who taught them about God. What questions did they ask?

  • Who do you know that gets excited about the Bible? Ask them why they love God’s Word so much.

  • Who do you know that shows their love for Jesus even during the hard times? Ask them how God has helped them.

With your parents, find people who have a faith in God that you want in your life. Your brave questions may turn into the great friendship you both need today.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the help and goodness you give us through others. I am asking you for grandparents and grandfriends who can teach me more about you. Help me be a great friend to them who shares everything you have taught me. Together, we will grow to know and love you more. Amen.
