Bible Readings

Take a few minutes to read the Bible verses listed and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in how this verse applies to you this week.

Psalm 119: 9-11, Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Memory Verse

Psalm 119:11

11 I treasure your word above all else; it keeps me from sinning against you.

Tina studied every day after school for her English test. She had to memorize a poem. Her mother could hear her in her room repeating, “Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though…” and then she would stop. This was as far as Tina could get in her attempt to recite Robert Frost’s poem. The next day at school, she asked her teacher, Mr. Jones, for help. He gave Tina some ideas to help her: listening to a recording, making flashcards, and even writing it down multiple times. Tina would listen to a recording each day and practice with her flashcards. Her brothers and sisters also helped her by reciting the poem with her. On the day of the test, Tina had no problem. All the words she had been listening to and reading came flooding back to her memory.

Today's verse encourages us to treasure the Word of God so we will not sin against him. How do we treasure God's Word in our hearts? It's easier than you think! Just as Tina committed her assignment to memory and was able to recall it later, this is what happens when we memorize Bible verses. The Word will come back to us when we need it.

This week, choose a Bible verse to memorize. Each day, read the verse in your Bible, write it down on a piece of paper or note card, and say it out loud. The more you repeat these steps, the more God's Word is treasured in your heart. By the end of the week, you will begin to know the verse without looking at it, and God will bring it back to you when you need it most.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for giving us the Bible. Please help me to memorize Bible verses so that I am ready with Scripture when I need it. Amen.
